Virgin hair has become popular for a number of reasons. The hair quality is better than any other hair type. The strands are tangle free, and shedding is a rare case. You can even use virgin hair for several installations. Moreover, the authentic virgin hair comes chemically untreated, so you can easily color and style it. However, not all virgin hair brands are created equal. There are some companies that claim they are selling original virgin hair, but in reality, they are selling very poor quality hair extensions, often processed, Chinese hair. Majority hair companies in the US sell low-quality hair extensions at hefty prices. The good news, however, is that there are still some companies that sell original and high-quality virgin hair at reasonable prices.

Intro To Virgin Hair

You’ve heard that virgin hair is your best bet if you want to wear a style that looks beautiful and natural. But maybe you’re a bit confused about WHY virgin hair is better — and how to get your hands on some that you love.

Sis, I see you.

When it comes to beauty and hair care, there are sooo many products on the market that it can be hard doing your research and narrowing down your options. And it’s even more difficult today to do this because the internet has really expanded our shopping options. Instead of being limited to stores in your area, you can hop online and order things from clear across the globe. That makes it hard to choose!

While I may not have all the answers you’re looking for (like how to find makeup online that perfectly matches your skin tone), I CAN help you learn what you need to know about virgin hair so that you’re one step closer to rocking a variety of killer styles that will have everyone asking for hairstyling tips.

What is Virgin Hair?

First of all, let’s talk about what qualifies as highest quality virgin hair.

One thing you may already know about virgin hair is that it hasn’t been chemically processed or color-treated in any way. These processes tend to damage hair over time, so only hair that has not been subjected to them are considered virgin hair. That means no:

  • Perms
  • Relaxers
  • Dyes or colorings (this includes highlights and ombre looks)
  • Bleach
  • Keratin treatments

But that’s not all! Highest quality virgin hair has also never been treated by harsh hair care techniques. That means it has never been:

  • Straightened
  • Curled
  • Flat-ironed
  • Blow-dried
  • Steam-treated

Donors of highest quality virgin hair have not been exposed to non haircare-related chemical toxins. This includes:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Drugs

They have also avoided certain hairstyles that can potentially cause damage to the cuticles. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Extensions
  • Weaves
  • Braids

The final determinant of virgin hair is that the hair cuticles are intact, free of damage, and run in the same direction. This means that virgin hair is less likely to have undesirable split ends. It’s also less likely to look dull/dry and more likely to have a healthy sheen.

In short, virgin hair is as close to the hair you were born with as possible.  It is normally soft to the touch, and is often straight.

*Note: If donor hair has undergone any of the above in the past, BUT has grown out, the regrowth does qualify as virgin hair. However, highest quality virgin hair comes from donors who have never done any of the above. 100% Virgin hair also remains untreated, unprocessed, and free of silicone, synthetic fibers, and fillers once it has been cut. Hair that has undergone any of this prior to being sold is no longer considered virgin hair.

Where Does Virgin Hair Come From?

The first thing you should know is that ethically sourced 100% virgin hair ALWAYS comes from living donors. Ethical hair sourcers also compensate their donors fairly. If you do research into the history of human hair trading, you will quickly learn that it’s a practice that has been going on for hundreds of years all over the world.

Historically, hair traders weren’t too concerned about where the hair came from, nor whether the donors were paid fairly for their participation. Some even go so far as to create bundles from fallen hair (hair collected from salon floors and hairbrushes).

This, however, is changing, as more and more people desire to know if the hair they are wearing was ethically sourced. Especially since, in many cases, selling their hair provides donors with a profitable way to support their families.

Each bundle of 100% virgin hair comes from the same donor, which means that there will be more consistency in not only quality, but in texture and color as well.

As far as location, the bulk of virgin hair on the market is sourced from different countries in Asia, mostly from temples in India. It can also come from places like China, Malaysia, Mongolia and Cambodia. In South America, virgin hair can come from places like Peru and Brazil.

In some areas, donated hair is shaved off of the donor’s head completely. This is the case for Hindu temples in India. Hindu women, children, and men travel to these temples en masse to shave and donate their hair as a sign of their faith and devotion to God. The temples then hold private auctions where hair vendors can purchase the hair.

The profits earned from the sales are devoted to improving the community by funding housing, education, and health care. In other areas, the donor’s hair is zip-tied into a ponytail and then carefully trimmed so that the cuticles remain undamaged. The donor is then individually compensated for their hair.

What Is The Benefit of Having Real Virgin Hair?

Healthy

One benefit of having real virgin hair is that it is so healthy and well-maintained. The lack of chemical treatments and harsh handling means that virgin hair will be strong, durable, and free of split ends. Virgin hair also has a tendency to be tangle-free, making it easier to style and maintain.

Beautiful

Because it’s been so well taken care of, virgin hair tends to have a nice sheen and a smooth texture. It is also often soft to the touch, even when thick.  Another benefit is that because of the variety of donors, there will be a variety of textures. Some donors have hair that is naturally thin and silky, whereas others have hair that is thick and wavy. This variety means that you have options to choose from.

Easier to Dye

If you like to have a bit of color in your life, you’ll be happy to know that virgin hair CAN be dyed. Not only that, since it has never been color-treated before, it’s actually easier for hair colorists to dye it exactly the way you want it to be. Also, because it hasn’t been damaged in the past, it can still be healthy after being dyed.

Can Be Styled with Heat

In addition to being dye-friendly, virgin hair can also be curled or straightened using heat tools, allowing you to style your extensions much as you would your own hair.

Long-Lasting

When properly cared for, virgin hair can easily last anywhere from a year to 18 months, making it a great investment.

How To Tell Real Virgin Hair From Fake Virgin Hair?

As a consumer, we often trust companies to do what they say they will. This means that if someone tells us that we are buying 100% virgin hair, we believe that we are buying 100% virgin hair. Unfortunately, though, there are a lot of hair vendors out there who sell fake virgin hair.

Sometimes it is by mistake (because they don’t know the difference themselves), but other times its solely to make a bigger profit since 100% virgin hair has an understandably higher price tag. They sell mixed hair at 100% virgin hair prices and pocket the profit.

It’s annoying to spend your good money on something only to find out that it is either inferior quality or it’s not even what you thought you were buying. That’s why it’s good to have knowledge on your side. Here are some tips to help you distinguish real virgin hair from fake virgin hair.

Sniff Test

If you are still in the store, sniff the hair. If it is 100% virgin hair, it should not smell like any type of chemical – including relaxers or perms.

Neutralizer Test

If you have been shipped the hair or have taken it home, wet the bundle of hair and then wash it with a dime-sized amount of neutralizing shampoo (the same shampoo that is used to wash out perms). If the shampoo turns pink, the hair has been chemically processed and, thus, is not virgin hair.

Cuticle check

Check the bundle for cuticles. You can do this by running your fingers up and down the shaft of the hair. It should feel smooth when going down, but not as much going up. If cuticles are not present, then they likely have been stripped using a process such as an acid bath. This chemical treatment disqualifies the hair as virgin hair.

Smoke Test

Another thing you can do is take a few strands of the hair and burn the ends with fire. If the hair emits a white smoke and turns to ash, it is human hair. If it melts, becomes stick, gives off a black smoke, and hardens up when it cools off, it is neither 100% human or virgin hair.

Too Perfect

Virgin hair is natural hair the way that it grows from someone’s scalp. No one’s hair is 100% perfect. If the hair looks a little bit TOO perfect, it may not be 100% virgin or may have been processed in some way to make it appear uniform.

The Color

If you are shopping in a store and notice that every single bundle of a certain style or color looks EXACTLY the same, chances are they have been chemically treated or colored. Because bundles come from different donors, it is highly unlikely that they will all look identical naturally.

What Is The Best Virgin Hair?

One of the beautiful things about the beauty industry these days is that there is so much variety and so many options. If one store or seller doesn’t work for you, there are many more out there to choose from. However, it’s important to do your due diligence when buying virgin hair.

Since it is a sizable investment, you want to be sure that you are spending your hard-earned money on highest quality virgin hair that will not only look beautiful and stand up to the hairstyles you desire, but that will last you for a very long time.

The problem is that not all hair care companies are created equal. Some sell sub-par hair at high prices because they are all about the bottom line – not the customer’s experience. That’s why we feel that the best virgin hair is not only 100% virgin (with no tangles or shedding), but is ethically sourced and reasonably priced. From the donor to the customer, the best virgin hair is left untouched so that the customer can decide how to play with and style it – not the seller.

Online hair experts consistently rank Mayvenn as #1 when it comes to premium virgin hair. It is also the #1 recommended  hair company by over 100,000 hair stylists and vendors across the United States. In addition to being known for having top-notch hair products, Mayvenn also stands out in the market by having prices that are very reasonable – especially considering the high quality.

However, if you are the skeptical type (which i totally understandable!), the other thing I love about Mayvenn s that they offer EVERYONE a 30-Day Guarantee. Whether you’re Beyonce shopping for a tour or just a girl who wants to rock a cute hairstyle, they give you 30 days to try their hair. You can do a full install, dye it, curl it, flat iron it – whatever. If you are not happy with it, they will exchange it within 30 days of purchase – no questions asked. That’s pretty dope customer service!

Ok, so I hope that this guide to virgin hair has helped you out a bit. Now get out there and turn some heads!

Virgin Hair Vendors On The Market

Diamond Virgin Hair Co.

The Diamond Virgin Hair Co. is a popular hair company that has been operating in the US and Europe in addition to countries in Asia for the last ten years. The company claims that it sells 100 percent virgin hair extensions. Well, we did the research and found that the company is telling the truth, even though there were some complaints by users. The company sells authentic virgin remy human hair. It deals in Brazilian and Peruvian hair. The hair quality is good, and you’ll notice minimal shedding and no tangling. Overall, most customers are happy with the hair extensions bought from Diamond Virgin Hair Co.

Indique

Indique Hair is a globally known hair extensions company with presence in the US, Europe, Asia and Africa. It has been operating for the last thirty years, and the company claims that it sells original, virgin hair extensions sourced from the temples in India. It is important to mention that the hair does not come from a single donor, and shedding might start from day one. Some customers are dissatisfied with the products, but others say it’s a good price per quality ratio.

Her Imports

Her Imports sells original, virgin hair sourced from India, Brazil, Peru, Malaysia, and Mongolia. Her Imports’ hair extensions are popular with celebrities, especially the “My Hair” brand that is created from handpicked hair from one of India’s most respected temples. Her Imports has been in the hair business for more than ten years now. The hair extensions from Her Imports are not processed, meaning you can easily dye them. Even better, tangling and shedding are minimal. We have a full review of the Her Imports brand here.

My Extensionz

My Extensionz is a new, but popular brand that brings you good quality hair extensions. The company is just over four years old now, but it has already established a good footing. Even though we came across some complaints and negative reviews about the company, yet most customers are satisfied with the products. The company sells original virgin hair. What makes the extensions unique is the fact that the company uses only those virgin hairs that have cuticle coatings in the same direction. This makes their movement very natural. The hair extensions are not chemically treated and feature attractive color and texture. The company sources its hairs from different locations around the world. Quality inspections of the products take place in Chicago.

Bella Dream Hair

Bella Dream Hair claims that it sells only authentic, virgin hair. When we tested the hair extensions, we found they are good, but not the best. The hair strands were seemingly not completely virgin, and it seemed like the hair did not come from a single donor. The hair extensions are beautiful, but we noticed some shedding and tangling. You can overcome the tangling if you take good care of the extensions. It seems like the company treats its products in some mild way. The good news, however, is that the hair looks natural with beautiful patterns. You can easily style them the way you prefer. Bella Dream customers are happy with the company.

Aliexpress Virgin Hair Vendors

Steer clear of vendors on Aliexpress, who claim to sell genuine, virgin hair. Those cheap hair extensions actually come from China, and they are made of rejected and chemically processed hair. The strands will start shedding straight out of the box. When it comes to the issue of tangling, Aliexpress hair extensions are the worst. People who bought their hair on Aliexpress are highly discontented with what they got. The vendors show you pictures of beautiful hair extensions and deliver you complete rubbish.
